Campaign Ambassador - Kris Aves
Name: Kris Aves
Sport/Activity: Golf
Locality: Barnet/Hertsmere
When serving as a Metropolitan Police Officer, I was injured during the 2017 Westminster Terror Attacks. The incident left me with a spinal cord injury and as a result I am wheelchair dependent. Following my injury, I realised everything had to change – my career, my house and my day-to-day activities. I had three things that I wasn’t sure I’d be able to do again and one of those things was to play golf.
However, it was through the support of my local pub that I was able to buy a ‘Paramotion’. This specialist mobility device enabled me to get back out on the course and enjoy the game I love. The first time I swung a club again, it bought a tear to my eye, and I think that demonstrates just how powerful sport can be. In my case, that single moment bought so much happiness. Since then, I have been able to represent Team Europe in the Cairns Cup and win the Grand Prix Paragolf De Roissy Stableford in France. In 2026, I will even be captaining Team Europe as we look to win Cairns Cup in Spain.
For me, sport and physical activity can create that safe space. On the golf circuit, we are all great friends with each other. You can feel that sense of community and everyone is so encouraging. Whenever we hit bad shots, someone will always say ‘the next one will be the best one’. Sport just has that ability to add so much positivity, and with the right organisations, the support and advice you can get make it so worthwhile! I’d also say though that you shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help either. With a disability we can still do everything, but just differently - it makes us unique!
Did you know there is a ParaGolfer/ParaMotion avilable in Herts?
Kris was the first recipient of a ParaGolfer through The Golf Trust based at his club The Shire London in Barnet, Hertfordshire. He has since been supported by his local community to purchase his own and the Paragolfer at The Shire London is now available for public use and one of only 10 available in the country! Find out more about the variety of ways disabled individiuals, groups and partner organisations can access this:
