Campaign Ambassador - Daniel Angus
Name: Daniel Angus
Sports/Activities: Futsal
As a visually impaired individual, I spent a lot of my childhood playing mainstream football on Sunday mornings with limited personal success. Whilst I was in Year 7 at secondary school I was invited to attend a disability sport taster day as part of the Youth Sport Trust Playground to Podium initiative. It was there that my journey with partially sighted futsal started, and to be honest, I haven’t looked back! From just a single day, I have now played at county, regional and national level, and even won two FA Disability Cups.
Through taking on leadership roles during secondary school, I developed essential skills such as communication, teamwork and organisation, which have benefitted me both on and off the pitch. These opportunities allowed me to inspire others, take initiative, and learn how to support teammates effectively. Moreover, they gave me a sense of responsibility and pride, helping shape my identity and ambitions for the future.
Currently I am undertaking a PhD in para-football with the Peter Harrison Laboratory at Loughborough University and I enjoy teaching current undergraduate students. The path I have been on, both academically and as an athlete, has taught me so much about the power that sport can have in shaping the lives of individuals with a disability. It has motivated me to make a difference and to champion their achievements wherever possible.
I now have the confidence to play, coach and seek employment in the area and I will always be grateful to those that have helped me along this journey. Remember, everyone’s journey will be different and yours can take whatever roads you want it to. The important thing is that you feel comfortable and enjoy every moment!
