Mental Health Awareness for Sport and Physical Activity

Provider: Mind in Mid Herts, 3 hours

We’ve listened to people living with mental health problems and people working in the sport and physical activity sectors to create a practical workshop that will help you:

  • Understand common misconceptions about mental health and the impact of stigma and discrimination
  • Identify the positive impact that being active has on physical and mental health
  • Appreciate the barriers that stop people getting active
  • Talk confidently about mental health
  • Know where to signpost people to if they need support
  • Identify practical actions to make your service more accessible for everyone

Minimum age: 16 years (designed for coaches, sport administrators, volunteers and front of house staff)
Price: £500 (course for up to 16 people)

Mental Health Awareness for Sport and Physical Activity+ eLearning

Provider: UK Coaching, Mind and 1st4Sport, 2-3 hours

Complete this newly enhanced course to gain the confidence to be able to support people experiencing mental health problems, and help them to thrive inside and outside of physical activity sessions.

Enrolling on this online course will help gain the knowledge, skills and confidence to better understand and support people living with mental health problems, and create a positive environment that ensures they enjoy the benefits of being active and keep coming back for more.

The four modules will increase your knowledge and understanding of mental health, providing you with the practical skills and strategies to be able to:

  • build people’s resilience, self-esteem and confidence
  • adapt your sessions to make them more inclusive
  • enable and support mental health recovery, and
  • tackle stigma and discrimination.

Minimum age: 16 years (designed for coaches, sport administrators, volunteers and front of house staff)

Spot the Signs & Save a Life

Provider: Delivered by Mind in Mid Herts in partnership with Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (HPFT) and Hertforshire Mind Network, 1 or 3 hour courses

Spot the Signs and Save a Life is a suicide prevention campaign, helping to remove the stigma of talking openly about suicide. The campaign provides training courses and signpost to mental health services available in Hertfordshire.

Spot the Signs training is fully funded aiming to increase participants’ knowledge and awareness about suicide. The training explores information about which groups of people are most at risk and why, protective factors and briefly review practical strategies for identifying and responding to signs of risk in adults. You will be provided with some of the latest information and statistics in regards to suicide nationally and locally in Hertfordshire.

This training will:

  • Increase awareness and knowledge of suicide
  • Introduce practical steps about how to respond to someone who may be at risk of suicide
  • Make you feel more confident about spotting the signs of suicide
  • There are 1 hour and 3 hour sessions available.

The OLLIE Foundation - Suicide Intervention Training

1 hour, half day, 1 day, 2 day and 3 day courses

OLLIE delivers a range of suicide awareness talks and training courses focusing on suicide awareness, prevention and intervention.

suicideTALK, safeTALK, ASIST and s2H have all been created by Canadian company LivingWorks Education.LivingWorks Education are a world leader in suicide prevention. Their interactive, practical workshops support suicide prevention initiatives all over the world. 

The Ollie Foundation also provide additional wellbeing training, as well as Mental Health First Aid qualifications.

Youth Mental Health First Aid

Provider: Streetgames, 3 hours

This introductory three-hour session raises awareness of young people's mental health.

The course covers:

  • Some of the common mental health issues affecting young people, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders and psychosis. 
  • Skills to work more effectively with young people living with mental health issues.
  • Ways to support young people with a mental health issue and relate to their experiences

Mental Health First Aid/Youth Mental Health First Aid

Provider: MHFA England

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a training course which teaches people how to identify, understand and help someone who may be experiencing a mental health issue. 

MHFA won’t teach you to be a therapist, but it will teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis – and even potentially stop a crisis from happening. You’ll learn to recognise warning signs of mental ill health and develop the skills and confidence to approach and support someone while keeping yourself safe. 

MHFA England offer a range of evidence-based face to face and digital learning opportunities, from awareness raising to skill development.

Minimum age: 16 years
Price: MHFA England value this course at £325 per person (costs may vary depending on location and instructor)

Mental Health Awareness & Resilience

Provider: Hertfordshire Mind Network

This course provides an overview of a range of mental health issues (from the more common anxiety and depression to less common psychosis) including their prevalence, signs and symptoms, causes and how they can affect people. The course will also help participants to consider how they can support their own mental health and wellbeing and that of others. Participants will be made aware of the importance of challenging stereotypes, myths and stigma surrounding mental health issues and championing inclusion.

Hertfordshire Mind Network also have a vast suite of mental health and wellbeing training available. This training covers topics such as hoarding, mental health in the workplace, isolation & loneliness  and so much more.
