Reviving Waltham Cross Playing Fields with new upgrades and community sessions

Active Local area celebrates the grand reopening of its upgraded playing fields with local MP, Mayor, Councillors and key partners

On Saturday 20th July, Waltham Cross residents celebrated the grand reopening of Waltham Cross Playing Fields. From 11am to 5pm, the park was filled with excitement as residents explored the newly upgraded facilities, made possible by the UK government's Levelling Up Fund. This significant investment of £14.3 million is part of a broader effort to rejuvenate Waltham Cross town centre.

The event showcased several new features, including a sports pavilion, skatepark, outdoor gym, interactive football goal, DJ booth, active running track and improved drainage on the sports field. These new additions will boost the health and wellbeing of the local community, providing high quality facilities for everyone to enjoy.

Key partners in this project included Herts Sport & Physical Activity Partnership (HSP), Broxbourne Borough Council, Sporting Aid CIC, Maverick Skateparks and Jupiter Leisure and Play. The event attracted 3,000 residents, including newly appointed MP for Broxbourne Lewis Cocking and Mayor Sherrie McDaid. Several local councillors also attended demonstrating their support for the project.

The day was filled with engaging activities, including football matches, skateboard jams and competitions, calisthenics, bicycle repairs, multi-sport sessions, volleyball, dodgeball and basketball. Local clubs and groups showcased their services, offering a glimpse into the exciting future of Waltham Cross Playing Fields. This grand reopening marks the beginning of ongoing efforts to revitalise this playing space, aiming to make it a vibrant and welcoming place for all.

The event also served as a catalyst for new weekly community activities, such as youth basketball, calisthenics and skateboarding, which commenced the following week. These projects are part of Waltham Cross Active Local, a place-based initiative led by HSP, designed to address health inequalities and promote physical activity in Hertfordshire’s most deprived areas. The initiative also looks to provide mentoring support, increased opportunities and empowers younger community members to play their part in supporting positive community cohesion.
