We believe that all young people, children and adults at risk have a right to protection. All clubs should be aware of the responsibility and importance of safeguarding within the sporting environment they create.

Club Matters

Club Matters provides a series of workshops and resources that provide support across club development including Safeguarding and Welfare. This section within Club Matters provides useful links and key information about safeguarding children and adults.

Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU)

The CPSU have developed a safeguarding self-assessment tool that clubs can use to check how effectively they are achieving the standards for safeguarding children in sport. There are simple questions for each of the nine standards elements which will help you assess what your club still needs to do.

Furthermore, the CPSU has an extensive list of resources on their website to support clubs to put policies, procedures and the necessary safeguards in place. These can be accessed on the links below:

Club Welfare Officer (CWO)

In many cases the CWO is the first point of contact for coaches, supporter, parents, volunteers, or any other individual who fears for the safety of a child, so it is essential that they are friendly and approachable. The role of the CWO includes:

  • Being the first point of contact for all associated with the club
  • Being approachable to all associated with the club
  • Having good communication and organisational skills
  • Being a good listener and providing clear advice
  • Promoting all relevant safeguarding policies
  • Having a ‘child focused’ approach; the child comes first

To become a CWO you will need to have the appropriate safeguarding qualifications. Please see the CPSU Club Welfare Officer information below.
