High Sheriff Recognises Bushey Health Walk Team for Outstanding Dedication
Bushey’s dedicated Health Walk leaders celebrate 35 years of combined volunteering, supporting local walkers rain or shine
The High Sheriff of Hertfordshire Annie Brewster JP presented Hertfordshire Health Walk’s Bushey Health Walk teams with a Health Walks Making a Difference High Sheriff Award. Lots of walkers turned up to greet the special guest and share the celebrations.
There are two walks in Bushey on different days, although they merged this week to meet the High Sheriff. Maureen Miller, Carmel Byers, Pauline Nembhard made the Bushey First Steps sustainable in May/June 2018 when they came 'on temporary loan' from areas outside of Bushey. The three of them have made this walk 'theirs' and to date still have some of the original elderly walkers attending this much loved gentle walk around King Georges Park come rain or shine.
Maureen is an experienced walker having completed 598 walks since she joined Health Walks (10 years of volunteering).
Carmel has been volunteering for 9 years. She is up to 293 walks and not only provides sensible, reliable support to Bushey but also has helped set up walks in Cowley Hill and is a regular at a longer walk in Aldenham.
Pauline has completed 82 walks, within her 6 years of volunteering.
David Bearfield is a linch pin and stepped up to take on the often challenging coordinating role for both Bushey walks. He was also the key volunteer during the difficult period of Covid and helping the walks to run smoothly. He has also completed 294 walks since 2009 and has been volunteering for Health Walks since 2014, totalling 10 years of volunteering.
Between the volunteers there is a grand total of 35 years of volunteering from this amazing group of people! A huge thank you from everyone for their dedication and enthusiasm through what has been some difficult years.
“I was delighted to present a Herts High Sheriff and Herts Sport & Physical Activity Partnership 'Making A Difference Award' to the volunteer Bushey Hertfordshire Health Walk team. The First Steps walk is ideal for those new to walking or recovering from illness such as a stroke. The team also guide a longer walk on Thursdays and walk leaders Maureen, Pauline, Carmel and David have clocked up a combined 35 years of volunteering between them, Maureen having completed 598 walks! Thank you! Hertfordshire County Council.”
The High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, Annie Brewster JP
