Countryside Management Volunteers Awarded High Sheriff Making a Difference Award
This group plays a crucial role in maintaining Hertfordshire’s natural spaces, such as Nomansland Common
High Sheriff of Hertfordshire Annie Brewster JP presented a Making a Difference Award for Outstanding Service to Improving the Environment for Wildlife and People to the Southwest Mid Week Volunteers. The team were carrying out some maintenance to “tidy up” a section of the hedge and clear some of the scrub that is encroaching into the main grassland in Nomansland Common in Wheathampsted. Clearing the hedge was also in preparation for the task which the High Sheriff will be returning to see in December, where they will have some new tree saplings ready to be planted in the gaps with the longer-term aim of a more healthy and diverse hedgerow.
The group is a weekly conservation volunteer group covering Southwest Hertfordshire. This group covers a large area and consequently are involved in a wide variety of activities with various District/Borough Councils and partners within Hertfordshire County Council. The group have a number of trained leaders, first aiders and machinery users.
“Most deserved 'Making a Difference Award' for outstanding service to improving the environment for wildlife and people to the Hertfordshire Countryside Management Service Southwest Mid Week Volunteer group who give their time and immense skill to preserving our Rights of Way and Open Spaces, such as the historic Nomansland Common, for us all to use recreationally. Thank you!”
The High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, Annie Brewster JP
