Young Champions Take Part in Second Day of Inclusive Leadership Training

The Inclusion Champions initiative forms part of the Inclusion 2028 programme. Upskilling & empowering aspiring young leaders with SEND.

Thirty Hertfordshire secondary school students (Yr9/10), all identified as aspiring young leaders with additional needs or impairments, came together at the University of Hertfordshire for the second phase of their Inclusion Champions Academy training. The day was delivered by tutors from Inclusion 2028 and followed an initial in-school session that introduced participants to the programme and explored the core skills and qualities needed to be an inclusive leader.

Representing schools from four School Games Organiser areas (Hertford and Ware - Sele; Stevenage - Nobel; St Albans and Harpenden - Beaumont and Marlborough), the students took part in a carousel of practical activities designed to help them enthuse, enable and empower others. The focus was on learning how to adapt games and equipment so activities can be made accessible for all young people.

The day began with an inspiring talk from Ella Beaumont, former GB wheelchair basketball player, online fitness influencer, TV researcher, personal trainer and No Limits 2026 Ambassador. Ella shared her personal journey in sport with a disability, offering motivation and practical guidance that resonated with the young leaders in the room.

The apporach was designed to build confidence among the Inclusion Champions, equipping them with the skills and self-assurance necessary to deliver and support inclusive, engaging activities for children and young people (CYP) within their own schools. The programme aims to create lasting cultural change by equipping these young leaders to champion accessibility, belonging and participation across their wider school communities.
