Young Basketball Leaders Strengthen Growing Community Workforce in Waltham Cross
Newly trained coaches in Waltham Cross are set to inspire the next generation through community basketball.

Eight aspiring basketball coaches took a major stride in their coaching journey this July, thanks to a dynamic partnership between the Herts Coaches Association, Herts Sport & Physical Activity Partnership (HSP), Sport Structures, and Basketball England.
The Basketball Level 2 Club Coaching Course was held over two consecutive Sundays, 6 and 13 July, at the Waltham Cross Young People’s Centre. Building on their previous success in completing a Level 1 qualification, these young leaders returned to deepen their knowledge and gain the practical skills required to deliver safe, inclusive, and engaging basketball sessions in their community.
Blending two practical in-person days with five virtual learning modules, the course was designed to provide participants with a well-rounded, flexible learning experience. It forms part of the Active Local Workforce Development Programme led by the Herts Coaches Association in partnership with HSP. The programme aims to upskill local leaders and build community resilience through sport and physical activity.
“We’re thrilled to see these young coaches stepping up to lead the way. With support from England Basketball and Sport Structures, they’re now better equipped to inspire the next generation and grow the sport locally.”
Matt Ridley, Active Local Officer Waltham Cross
Graduates of the course will put their new skills into action this summer at the Summer Slam Basketball Camp, to be held on the newly renovated outdoor court at Waltham Cross Playing Fields. This exciting opportunity will allow them to coach younger children, promote physical activity, and spark a passion for basketball across the community.
The initiative is a testament to what’s possible when local investment meets passionate young people. Supported through a successful Sport England Movement Fund application, the Herts Coaches Association, HSP and its partners continue to create pathways for youth development, unlocking new opportunities in coaching, volunteering, and sport leadership.
Justin Jones, course leader for England Basketball, reflected: “It’s powerful to see young people come full circle, from participants to role models. With the Level 2 under their belts, they’re now not just coaching, they’re leading, mentoring, and shaping the future of local basketball.”
As part of the ongoing Active Local Workforce Development Programme which now feeds into the Sport England Supported Places work in Waltham Cross, further training and leadership opportunities are being planned in the area.
