Waltham Cross Ball Court Gets a Youth-Led Makeover

Youth-designed court revitalises Waltham Cross community space.

The newly renovated ball court at Waltham Cross Playing Fields is now open, thanks to the creativity, passion, and ideas of local young people!

This transformation is part of Active Local Waltham Cross, a place-based initiative led by Herts Sport & Physical Activity Partnership (HSP). The project aims to boost physical activity, reduce health inequalities, and create more positive experiences for children and young people.

Over the past year, Active Local Waltham Cross Officer, Matt Ridley has worked closely with young people in the community, asking what would make the park more enjoyable, inclusive, and inspiring. Their message was clear: a brighter, more exciting court space would motivate them to be more active and spend more time outdoors.

Young people submitted their own court design ideas, which were reviewed by Broxbourne Borough Council and brought to life by HSP in partnership with Sporting Aid CIC. With funding from the Travis Perkins Community Fund, the court was resurfaced and repainted by Court Sport UK, and finished with custom logo stencils to recognise all those who contributed.

Local drone specialist Red Air captured the transformation from above, highlighting a fantastic community effort - more photos to be shared soon!

The new court will be officially launched at the Waltham Cross Sport Festival on Saturday 19 July, 11am–5pm, with free coaching, exhibition matches, giveaways, and on-court competitions for all ages.

This is a shining example of youth voice in action - creating a vibrant community space designed by young people, for young people.
