Sport Welfare in Action Comes to Hertfordshire

Supporting clubs across Hertfordshire to create safe, inclusive and positive sporting environments where welfare is at the heart of every experience.

HSP is proud to support Sport Welfare in Action, a national campaign running from 18 to 22 May, shining a light on the importance of welfare and safeguarding in grassroots sport and physical activity.

Led by the Active Partnerships National Organisation, the campaign celebrates the work of Sport Welfare Officers and the difference they make to clubs, volunteers and participants across the country. It also provides an opportunity to highlight the positive work already happening across Hertfordshire to create safe, welcoming and inclusive environments.

At its heart, the campaign is about people. It focuses on ensuring that children, young people and adults can take part in sport feeling safe, valued and supported. Positive experiences do not happen by chance. They are built in environments where welfare is understood and part of everyday practice.

Tom McManus, Senior Project Officer at HSP, said:

“Welfare is the foundation to safe and fun sport. When clubs put welfare first, they create environments where people can truly enjoy being active and feel confident that they are supported.”

Funded by Sport England and the National Lottery, the Sport Welfare Officer Network plays a key role in helping clubs and organisations strengthen safeguarding and good practice in ways that are practical and easy to apply.

In Hertfordshire, Bob Fox, Sport Welfare Officer, and Tom McManus work alongside clubs and their workforce to develop inclusive and supportive environments that place the welfare of members at the centre of everything they do.

Throughout the campaign week, clubs and partners are encouraged to get involved, share messages and reflect on their own approach to welfare. A range of resources, including social media graphics, guidance and practical tools, is available to support this work and can continue to be used beyond the campaign. Even small actions can make a big difference. Starting conversations, reviewing approaches or sharing good practice all help create safer, more positive experiences for everyone involved.
