The Herts Coaches Association (HCA) and Herts Sport & Physical Activity Partnership (HSP) have collaborated on the Active Local Workforce Programme to create more opportunities for upskilling residents within three targeted communities in Hertfordshire: Waltham Cross, Cowley Hill, and Bedwell.
Both organisations strongly believe that tackling inequalities and physical inactivity must be led by people within the community who have lived experience. By upskilling community members to become a localised workforce, the programme aims to leave a lasting legacy in these ‘Places.’
HCA and HSP's Active Local Team gathered insights from residents, community clubs, and organisations to understand the needs and interests for running a range of courses and workshops.
The programme launched this month with an Introduction to Coaching Basketball course held in Waltham Cross. Delivered in partnership with Basketball England at the Waltham Cross Young People’s Centre, the course worked with a cohort of 10 young people with the vision of creating a new community basketball club.
As part of the programme, all participants will be connected with a local organisation—if not already engaged—who will support them in putting their newly acquired skills into practice.
HCA and HSP are extremely grateful for the financial support from the Sport England Movement Fund, which awarded the Association approximately £15,000 for the delivery of this programme.
Next, HCA will host Multi-Skills Activator training in each area, along with sport-specific training in activities such as cycling and pickleball.
