Pedals, Paths, and People: Active Travel Day Brings Waltham Cross Together

Wheels Turning and Communities Moving in Waltham Cross

Waltham Cross Playing Fields was transformed into a vibrant community hub on Saturday 10 May, as Broxbourne Borough Council, British Cycling, and the Herts Sport & Physical Activity Partnership (HSP) joined forces to host an Active Travel Day celebrating walking and wheeling in the heart of Waltham Cross.

The event, made possible through funding from HSP’s Active Local initiative, brought over 200 local residents together to enjoy a day packed with activities designed to promote low-impact, accessible, and sustainable travel. Families, individuals, and community groups turned out in force to take part, demonstrating the growing appetite for active travel in the borough.

Riding Into the Future
The highlight of the day came in the form of over 20 community bikes made available for Learn to Ride sessions, giving children and adults alike their first taste of cycling in a safe, supportive environment. For many, it was the first time riding on two wheels—an experience filled with excitement, a sense of achievement, and fulfilment.

A group led ride was delivered by Hugo from Cheshunt Cycle Club and the Broxbourne Cycle programme, taking more confident cyclists on a scenic route through the Lee Valley Regional Park. For those preferring to travel on foot, Gill from Hertfordshire Health Walks led a guided walk through the local landscape, promoting the benefits of walking for both physical and mental wellbeing.

More Than Just Movement
The day wasn’t just about getting active—it was about building community. Free refreshments and food were available at the Waltham Cross Sports Pavilion, where families gathered to rest, connect, and enjoy the atmosphere.

Local bike shop Stanley Bridge Cycles offered free tune-ups and repairs for bikes and scooters, while Highway Cycles showcased the latest in electric bike technology—giving attendees a glimpse into the future of active, green transport.

“This event shows just how powerful community partnerships can be when it comes to getting people moving. Whether it’s their first time on a bike or part of a regular walking group, today was about creating opportunities for everyone to travel actively, safely, and confidently in their local area.”
