A recent report released at the end of 2025 by ParalympicsGB looked to address three core areas: the lived experience of disabled individuals in sport and physical activity, public perceptions and attitudes towards disability, and the experiences of children and young people, with emphasis on inclusion in school and community sport. Across the dataset, 51% of individuals that took part suggested that they did not feel confident enough to take part in sport and physical activity, with 29% adding that this prevents them from engaging with the sector altogether. A perceived lack of understanding and inclusive practices by providers were identified as noticeable barriers but through better trained staff and the creation of adaptive classes, individuals can provide the required support to enable those with a disability to be more active.
Through the No Limits 2026 campaign at Herts Sport & Physical Activity Partnership (HSP), workforce development opportunities are being offered to upskill individuals to better support those with a disability. So far, 60 individuals have engaged with 3 events across our Disability Inclusion Learning Series and up to 35 training events have been affiliated with the campaign. Our ambassadors also look to inspire many more to get involved with the sector and from the results of the ParalympicsGB report, showcasing disability sport was a vital route in improving confidence levels among the disabled population. 58% of adults who engaged with the Paris 2024 Games agreed that Paralympians inspired them to participate in sport and physical activity.
HSP are very fortunate that several of our ambassadors have been involved with the Paralympic movement, not least Louise Fiddes who won gold in the SB14 Women’s 100m Breaststroke during the Paris 2024 Games. Through their stories and the partnership formed with the National Paralympic Heritage Trust, HSP hope to highlight the power that such events can have on the lives of disabled individuals. At our Annual Partners Event on Friday 10th July, the National Paralympic Heritage Trust will be present, showcasing memorabilia from across Paralympic history. They will also be supporting with future schools’ visits, having recently attended the FE Games held at Oaklands College on Monday 15th June.
