Multiply Project Empowers Over 9,000 Hertfordshire Residents

Innovative numeracy skills programme using sport and physical activity to improve confidence with numbers.

Over the past three years, the Multiply project has been dedicated to enhancing the confidence and numerical skills of individuals across Hertfordshire. Nationally funded by the Department for Education and cooridnated in Hertfordshire by Step2Skills, the aim is to support learners to be more employable and have skills to develop their careers having strengthened their numeracy ability. The Partnership has played a pivotal role in reaching out to those who are least engaged and comfortable with numbers, utilising fun and innovative physical activities. This initiative has been supported by tutors from Apex 360 and Stevenage FC Foundation.

“I come here because I get a lot of benefits to my physical health, my mental health. I improve my communication skills, my math skills and English skills also.”

Multiply Participant

In the past year, we have refined our approach, learning from previous delivery phases to create a rich and engaging experience. This has successfully attracted participants who stayed for 10 or more weeks to develop their numeracy skills. All participants either lacked a Level 2 qualification in Maths or had lost confidence in their numerical abilities.

Over 9,000 Hertfordshire residents have participated in the programme through various delivery partners over the three years. We exceeded our initial target of 200 participants by working with diverse groups, including refugee and asylum seekers residing in hotels, day services, and community SEND groups. The innovative activities were supported by investments from Step2Skills, which provided Blazepods and StatSports vests. These tools enabled tutors to create engaging games and activities that motivated learners to be more active and take an interest in numbers.

The legacy of Multiply project and connection with Step2Skills is that a continued effort is being made to link employment opportunities through physical activity sector, and we have contributed to national learning of Multiply project following submission of innovation case study.

A fantastic video was produced and showcased at the Multiply Celebration Event, highlighting best practices and lessons learned throughout the delivery phases of the past three years. Check out the video link below to learn more about HSP’s involvement in Multiply.
