Work to improve inclusion across sport and physical activity is gathering momentum, as Activity Alliance, one of the No Limits 2026 campaign partners, has joined forces with national organisations including the Active Partnerships National Organisation, CIMSPA, Sport England and UK Sport to introduce a new set of Inclusive Learning Principles. Designed to break down barriers to learning, with a strong focus on disabled people, the principles aim to create opportunities for everyone to reach their full potential and closely align with the No Limits 2026 campaign aims to deliver lasting change in how disabled people access and experience sport and physical activity across Hertfordshire.
The principles reflect a collective effort to rethink how learning is designed and delivered, placing inclusion at the heart of the process rather than as an afterthought. They encourage accessible and flexible learning from the outset, shaped by lived experience and focused on real-world application, while promoting clear communication and continuous improvement.
One in four people in the UK is disabled, yet adults with a limiting illness or disability are twice as likely to be inactive. In Hertfordshire, 23.5% of disabled people currently take part in no physical activity, highlighting the need for change. Despite strong interest, disabled people remain underrepresented in the workforce, with just 9% having opportunities to coach or deliver activity compared to 24% of non-disabled people. The principles aim to address this imbalance by providing a practical framework to embed inclusion from the start and create more inclusive opportunities.
More than just a resource, the principles represent a shared commitment across the sector to build a workforce that better reflects the communities it serves, with organisations encouraged to adopt and embed the approach in their learning and development and share it more widely.
The Inclusive Learning Principles and supporting one-page guide are available to download, accompanied by a self-assessment tool to help organisations apply and embed the approach.
