The Herts Sport & Physical Activity Partnership (HSP), in collaboration with The Leadership Centre, have joined forces and are delighted to announce the launch of Hertfordshire Leading the Movement—a fully funded, year-long leadership development programme designed to strengthen leadership capacity across the sport, physical activity, health and community sectors.
Launching in January 2026, the programme responds to an increasing need for leaders who can navigate complexity, collaborate across organisational boundaries and take bold action to address long-standing inequalities in physical activity. Hertfordshire’s communities are diverse and evolving, and the systems that influence participation in movement—health, education, local government, community organisations and beyond—are more interconnected than ever. Leading the Movement has been designed to help leaders understand those systems, work effectively within them, and champion approaches that create long-term impact for residents.
The programme blends innovative leadership development with practical, real-world problem-solving, enabling participants to learn together, test ideas, and build relationships that strengthen the countywide movement system.
Leading the Movement combines in-person workshops, strategic masterclasses and optional online support. It focuses on systems thinking, collaboration and developing leaders who can inspire change in complex, fast-changing environments.
Two pathways ensure the programme supports both emerging and senior leaders:
Designed for individuals with approximately 3–5 years’ experience who are ready to step into broader leadership.
Workshops and optional action learning explore:
Systems thinking and informal power
Influencing without authority
Overcoming barriers to change
Leading transitions and creating momentum
Thriving in uncertainty
For experienced leaders working at strategic level with significant decision-making responsibility.
Masterclasses and optional coaching focus on:
Navigating a VUCA environment
Fostering innovation
Identifying and addressing “immunities to change”
Crafting compelling public narratives that inspire action
Both pathways come together for joint launch and closing events to share learning, strengthen relationships and build a shared purpose across the system.
Charlie Mann, Senior Clubs & Workforce Lead at HSP, said:
“We know that leadership is one of the most powerful levers we have for creating healthier, more active communities. This programme is about giving leaders the tools, confidence and support to shape change—whether they’re working in a local club, a community organisation, a health setting or at strategic level. By developing leaders who understand systems, build strong partnerships and act with purpose, we can create a movement across Hertfordshire that reaches and benefits every community.”
