Football for HERts: Removing Barriers for Women

Celebrating International Women's Day

In celebration of International Women’s Day 2025, Herts Sport & Physical Activity Partnership (HSP) is proud to highlight a local initiative that embodies the theme of imagining a gender-equal world - Football for HERts (FFH). Founded in February 2024, this community group champions participation for women, where diversity is embraced, and every woman’s voice is valued. By taking action to create a space where women can play, connect, and thrive, FFH is a powerful reminder that accelerating action for gender equality can start with community-driven efforts.

FFH was formed from the realisation that there were not many flexible, recreational football opportunities for women in Hatfield or surrounding areas. FFH founder Beth envisioned a space where women of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds could play football without judgment or barriers. What started with six participants quickly flourished, with weekly sessions now welcoming 15 to 18 women regularly, fostering an environment where individualism is celebrated.

After successfully securing £1,830 from the Welwyn Hatfield Community Fund, sessions are offered free of charge, removing financial barriers for all involved. Beth has also supported participants in sourcing affordable kit through community platforms, as she believes that cost should not be a barrier to participation.

The sessions have become more than just football as participants have created a support network that transcends the pitch. Women aged 21 to 62 come together weekly, forging intergenerational friendships, building confidence, and supporting one another. The group is proudly inclusive, welcoming trans women and non-binary individuals, advocating that everyone deserves a place to belong. The impact has been life changing, with some participants commenting that they have rediscovered their love for football in a space free from judgment.

FFH is a brilliant example of how collective action can drive gender equality. Beth’s vision of an inclusive, flexible football space has developed into a thriving community that supports mental health, builds confidence, and encourages women to reclaim physical activity on their terms.

When asked about the early success of FFH, Beth commented: “I set out with the intention of the sessions being truly inclusive of everyone, regardless of backgrounds, footballing experience, and ability... It’s a pleasure to facilitate such inclusive, laughter-filled, fun sessions, and the credit goes to those who show up, rain or shine, to support each other.”

This International Women’s Day, FFH reminds us that progress starts locally. Together, we can accelerate action toward a more equitable world, and that one person’s determination can ripple out to uplift an entire community.
