Celebrating Inclusion: A Secondary Festival of Sport for Special Schools

A unique sporting festival brought together special schools across the county to celebrate inclusion and involvement.

On Thursday 20th November, 67 pupils from eight special schools across the county came together to participate in a Festival of Sport, organised by Inclusion 2028 in partnership with Herts School Games. The main objective was to create an environment where every pupil felt valued, capable, and included, regardless of ability or background.

This was the first inclusive event for the KS5 leaders from Simon Balle School and Richard Hale School following their training in October. To ensure every participant could engage meaningfully, the wide range of activities was carefully adapted by the leaders to meet the individual needs of the students. This allowed each pupil to participate fully, enjoy themselves, and experience success. The festival featured Table Cricket, Boccia, Archery, target games, and indoor athletic events.

One leader described the experience as “rewarding,” while another emphasised how eye-opening it was to learn more about the different modes of communication used by individuals with a range of disabilities.

We would like to thank Ella Beaumont, one of our Ambassadors for the No Limits 2026 Campaign, as well as the teachers and teaching assistants who played a vital role in supporting the pupils and ensuring the festival ran smoothly, safely, and in a friendly manner for everyone involved.

H. Warrington from Amwell View School said:
“The atmosphere was wonderful – so welcoming and supportive. The sports leaders were fantastic with the pupils, and the whole event was run so efficiently. Our pupils had the best time, and we are so grateful for the opportunity to attend.”

The Secondary Festival of Sport for Special Schools was far more than just a day out. It was a celebration of ability, resilience, and the transformative power of inclusion. We look forward to running more events throughout the year.
