In April, the Sport England Active Lives Adult Survey results for the year 2024/25 were released. The survey incorporates a range of questions to assess the physical activity levels of individuals across the country. Over 175,000 individuals aged 16+ took part providing an excellent insight into the nation’s current activity levels.
In one of the key headlines, activity levels for disabled individuals have increased 5.4% over the last decade, a testament to some of the great work going on in improving physical activity provision across the country. However, disabled people remain twice as likely to be inactive as those without a disability (39.3% for disabled individuals compared to 19.7% for non-disabled individuals), highlighting a persistent and significant inequality. Inactivity rates rise further when individuals report multiple impairments and given that seven in ten disabled people have more than one impairment, this affects a substantial proportion of the disabled population. According to the Activity Alliance’s Social Report Tool, the current inactivity gap carries an estimated societal cost of £10.9 billion. Such a scale of impact underscores the continued need for stronger action and support for disabled individuals to participate in physical activity. Through effective initiatives designed to provide opportunities for participation, the inactivity gap can be reduced, thereby presenting multiple benefits to the physical and mental health of individuals with a disability.
Herts Sport & Physical Activity Partnership, working with local and national partners, continue to strive to improve physical activity provision and support those with a disability through the No Limits 2026 campaign. The lived experiences of our ambassadors (Our Ambassadors) form a vital voice, with many ambassadors already involved in several events, highlighting how sport and physical activity has had a substantial impact in each of their lives.
Our workforce development activities (Upcoming Events) also continue to upskill individuals across the county with 30 training events already affiliated with the campaign thus far. These events provide an excellent opportunity for the wider community to learn more about inclusive practices for those with a disability, and we hope to see many of you attend such events throughout the year.
