Chinese New Year (Dragon/Lion Dance)

Let the children touch the dragon or lion prop before you use it in a dance. Practice walking low (crouched) and small jumps together so children learn the movement shape.

Adaptations:

  • Make a simple dragon with a red blanket and a cardboard head.
  • Paint paper and fold it into fans for children to use for the tea dance

Extra ideas:

Use drums and cymbals to make music for the dance.  Show short videos of real lion/dragon dances and talk about what they mean.  Always check with families and explain the activity respectfully.
