These are challenging and difficult times for us all, but for vulnerable teenagers the Covid-19 pandemic is proving particularly tough. Growing Resilience in Teens; GRIT is a unique doctor-led charity, that helps vulnerable teenagers with mental health issues, particularly those with self-harming behaviours, anxiety and stress related conditions.
GRIT works across Hertfordshire, led by a team of doctors improving the mental health of teenagers through their unique and innovative non-contact boxing programme alongside professional coaching and mentoring. Their work has become even more urgent and important as a result of the increased stresses of the Covid-19 crisis for young people.
GRIT was delighted to receive a grant from Herts Sports Partnership to fund a six week course of ‘The Rumble’, a version of the GRIT boxing coaching programme, for young people living in the Jackman’s Estate, Letchworth.
The Rumble teaches non contact boxing skills combined with coaching skills that help to develop a healthy mindset in young people. This can improve self confidence, self belief, improve relationships and help to solve conflict in a healthier way, as well as allowing the young person to understand that they are in charge of their life and it is within their power to create an environment that allows them to thrive.
A teenager who has recently completed the GRIT programme but wishes to remain anonymous, has said ‘GRIT has given me hope through the last couple of months, and has been the only thing I could look forward to’.
The Rumble is free to those attending and sessions are weekly, starting on Thursday 27 August at Letchworth Rugby Club. Two separate sessions will run, in order to be compliant with Covid 19 restrictions;
- First session: 4 – 5.15pm for ages 10–13.
- Second session: 5.15 – 6.30 pm for ages 14–18
Hand wraps and a light refreshment snack will be provided. There are 30 places on a first come first served basis and if you would like to register your interest please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
GRIT is hoping to roll out The Rumble in many other venues, as Government guidelines allow.
