The ever-popular Hertfordshire wide This Girl Can in Herts campaign returns to the county between 15 and 21 June in a somewhat different style to previous years. Co-ordinated by the Herts Sports and Physical Activity Partnership (known as HSP), usually based at the Hertfordshire Sports Village, the offering is entirely virtual yet ironically, with a larger community presence than ever before.
At the end of May a call was put out to the women and girls of Hertfordshire, asking if they would like to come together as the faces of this year’s campaign. The request was responded to immediately, with more than seventy consented images depicting sport and physical activity both during season, and under lockdown, sent to the Partnership in just a week. Images of paddle boarding, aerial hoop, outdoor yoga, kick boxing, swimming, cycling and walking have now all been made freely available on the Partnership’s website for others to use in an attempt to spread the message that ‘This Girl Can’, as widely as possible.
Alex Varran, HSP’s Women and Girls’ Project Officer, is thrilled with the engagement from individuals and sports clubs across the county, and the number of activities represented, commenting:
“It is crucial to the Partnership that we run the campaign, despite the restrictions on being physically active. We want the campaign to serve several purposes; primarily for women and girls to celebrate their sport and achievements, but secondly, to highlight the opportunities that we so desperately want to resurface once things return to some form of normality. We sampled asking the public for their own images last year, and it worked brilliantly. This time we have had more submissions in shorter timeframe and are confident that with the increase in use of social media, people will be excited to see themselves representing such a meaningful message.”
The campaign will appear on the Partnership’s social channels; Facebook, Twitter and new to the frame, Instagram, all under the handle @sportinherts.
