Matt Rayner

I joined the partnership on secondment from Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council to take on the responsibility associated to overseeing the partnerships work associated with the Holiday Activities and Food Programme, Active Local and our main projects and programme work associated to sport, schools, young people and what is known as our core market (clubs, coaches and volunteers).

Having grown up in the beautiful surrounding of the Lake District in the North of England, the great outdoors and sport has always been part of my up-bringing. After finishing school I took the opportunity to play rugby in British Columbia, Canada after which I had the privilege of attending University of Bath where I graduated with 1st Class degree in Sports Development. On completion of my time in Bath, I moved to Herts and was offered a role at Gosling Sports Park, Welwyn Garden City as the Community Partnerships Coordinator. My role was to create an international tennis performance hub within the park which included developing a strong community programme for tennis and a multitude of other sports. After 2years working for the GSP, I moved to Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council originally as the Youth and Sport Manager and then the Community Partnerships Manager.

Having been involved in the partnership since I first moved to Hertfordshire back in 2007, it is great to now be involved in the development and growth of its work. I believe the partnership has the ability to affect huge change across county but that can only be done by working together with traditional and non-traditional partners. My role is to grow, develop and activate the multitude of partners that we already work with as well and new ones in a collective effort to deliver on the aspirations to strengthen the local sporting infrastructure and begin to make a dent in Hertfordshire’s stubborn inactivity levels.
