Are you over 50 and have a sporting talent that you’d like to share? The Herts Sports Partnership is seeking volunteers aged 50+ to help roll out of Sport and Physical Activity programmes across the county.
The Partnership is soon to launch its Active Together project which aims to get older adults over 50 to be more active as well as passing on any sporting skills to others. The hope is to recruit leaders to run sessions throughout the district offering a range of activities including dancing, yoga, low impact aerobics, country walks, bowls, swimming, badminton, archery and more.
Herts Sports Partnership are looking for people who may already have a coaching or leadership award, or who would like to achieve a coaching qualification – or simply those with an interest in or experience of putting on activities for adults over 50.
Herts Sports Partnership Sports Development Manager, John O’Callaghan said “
“This is a great opportunity for people who have an interest in sport to help inspire other adults to be more active. We are also keen to fund people who want to qualify as coaches for their local community.”
He added: “There is a great deal of evidence that shows that as we get older we become less active. 80% of adults over 50 in Hertfordshire are not doing enough physical activity, which puts them at risk of a whole range of serious health problems including heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Our research tells us that if we can expand the programme of opportunities on offer, to help older adults find good quality, well run sport and physical activity sessions, delivered by enthusiastic leaders from within their peer group, then they will be prepared to participate in greater numbers.
The Active Together project is also designed to enable people to expand their friends, share new experiences, try new activities and tackle loneliness and isolation. We would love people with a bit of time on their hands to get in touch and help us coordinate and deliver these sessions.”
