The world of sport provides a wealth of opportunities for young people to become involved in varied volunteering opportunities. Often the most popular option is coaching, but opportunities to volunteer in sport range from officiating and assisting with activity programmes, helping design a sports club’s website, to helping to run a sports event.
Volunteering in sport provides a perfect avenue for young people to get involved or stay involved with their favourite sport and get the following rewards:
- Enhanced skills and experience in a field they are passionate about
- Entry to pathways leading to a career in the sport and physical activity industry
- Practical awards and certificates
- Possible membership of club or community group
Step into Sport targets 14-19 year olds by providing a simple framework of coordinated opportunities at a local level, to enable young people to begin and sustain an involvement in leadership and volunteering in sport. Through this young people have the opportunity to take part in a range of activities that sports clubs and other organisations deliver. The aim of the programme is to support young volunteers; to develop key life skills; gain new skills; increase knowledge; build self-confidence and achieve new qualifications.
